Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA)
The Trump administration announced in September 2017 that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) was ending. This was a decision that was opposed by many because it would leave thousands of individuals without the ability to work legally. The end of DACA would also subject them to deportation.
Injunctions were issued as a result of multiple lawsuits across the country challenging the decision. These injunctions kept DACA alive and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) allowed those who already had DACA to apply to renew their benefits. However, this was only temporary as the lawsuits went through the courts and ultimately to the United States Supreme Court.
In November 2019, the Supreme Court heard arguments for and against ending the DACA program. A decision is expected sometime in June 2020, which is right around the corner. If DACA continues, individuals will be able to continue to renew their DACA benefits. However, if DACA ends, thousands of people would be left without the benefits and security that come with DACA. It is unknown, but possible that USCIS will continue to process all pending DACA applications if DACA is taken away.
